If you’re like me, you’ve had vision problems for years and by now you’ve heard about lasik surgery and its potential to correct your eyesight. You’ve probably seen advertisements promoting the procedure or maybe you know someone who’s had it. If you’re thinking about having lasik surgery, the first thing you’ll want to do is determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the lasik procedure by undergoing a thorough examination with your eye doctor. So how does a lasik surgeon decide whether you’re a good candidate for lasik?
Your age is one of the factors your doctor considers when determining whether you are a suitable candidate for lasik or not. You should be eighteen years of age or older. Some doctors may have higher minimum age recommendations. If you are in your late thirties or early forties and use glasses only when reading, lasik may not be the right call for you. As you near and get into your forties, the ability to focus on objects nearer to you begins to lessen. This is a natural part of aging called presbyopia, which lasik cannot correct. Presbyopia was something I learned about and discussed when I had my exams for lasik since I am over eighteen but not a senior citizen. :)
Your overall health and your eyesight issues are important factors your eye doctor will discuss with you thoroughly. You should be in good health. Your eyeglass prescription should be stable. If your prescription has changed within the last year, lasik may not be right for you. You’ll need to discuss cataracts, arthritis, being pregnant, having diabetes and any other conditions with your doctor. Your medical history could prevent you from being suitable for lasik surgery. Be honest and make sure you are prepared to disclose and discuss your medical history with your doctor.
The lasik procedure is not a miracle. It is important you understand that and set realistic goals for your eye surgery. Your attitude and expectations will also be factors in determining if you’re a good candidate for lasik surgery. Your doctor will want to make sure that your expectations are clear and realistic. You need to be willing to be and convey that you are a good patient. That means you must follow your doctor’s instructions, both before and after surgery. Having a good attitude and realistic expectations will help determine if you are suitable for lasik so discuss any fears, preconceived notions or expectations you may have at length with your doctor.
These are a few of the things I had to consider and discuss with doctors while I was thinking about having lasik surgery. Finding out if you would make a good candidate for lasik is just the first step, but it’s an important one. Talk to your doctor to discover if lasik is right for you.
